Join me as I explore all the compelling reasons why a library card is a key to unlocking new opportunities, fostering personal growth, and building a stronger, more connected community. From endless literary adventures to valuable resources and vibrant community events, discover why your local library is a hidden gem waiting to be explored.
Books - Okay, so this one is pretty obvious! But hear me out. In a world where Amazon reigns supreme, and the next bestseller can be at your doorstep the very next day, hold off on that next book purchase. Do you really need to own every book you read (don’t answer that!)? The library is the perfect place to go for your best-seller fix. In a post-pandemic world, you don’t even need to do very much. You can search the online catalog from your phone, put in a request (or add your name to the waitlist), and have your book ready for pickup (or even curbside pickup) the very next day. With children, it's so wonderful to go into the children’s room and be able to say, “YES, you can have that! And that…and that…in that…let’s get them all!”
Audio Books - There are tons of audiobook subscription services out there, and most of those are great (and worth every penny!), but did you know that many local libraries have licenses for audiobooks that you can take advantage of if you have a library card? You just have to ask and show your library card. Usually, new audiobooks will be available at your fingertips (or on your smartphone) in a matter of minutes. While most of us are here because we love a good physical book, nothing beats listening to a great audiobook on a road trip!
Ebooks - Like audiobooks, ebooks are also available at most public libraries with just a library card. If you love a good Kindle or e-reader, you may be able to forego your monthly subscription and take advantage of your free one. Load up your kids’ tablet with new books, or stock up for yourself. Ebooks usually work similarly to physical books–you “check out” the ones you want and return them when you are finished. Some libraries have a free subscription to a digital library so you can read as many as you want. If ebooks are your mode of reading, then ask your librarian what kind of ebook system they have in place.
Museum Passes - Here’s a resource that, once you realize it's available, you’ll wonder why you didn't know about it sooner. Many libraries have relationships with museums, aquariums, zoos…you get the idea…where you get a huge discount just by flashing your library card–sort of. Usually, you have to set up your day trip in advance and get the tickets from the participating library before you go. But an extra step is well worth the discount you’ll get for you and your family. Often libraries have a limited number of passes, so check before you make your plan.
Free Classes - Oh, the classes! Knitting, gardening, finances, Legos, yoga, art, wildlife, arts and crafts, I could go on and on. The library is the PERFECT place to take a class, and usually, the classes are free of charge or offered at a very low cost. The best way to see what your library is offering is to drop in or check their offerings on their website. Typically classes are categorized for children, teens, and adults and there is almost always something for everyone too look forward to. The best part is there are always new offerings, so be sure to check regularly if you don't see something of interest right away.
Support an Author - Know an author? Holding a library card gives you a unique opportunity to support your author friend by requesting their book for purchase at your home library. Most library websites will have a section where you can request for a title to be carried. You just need to know a few pieces of information about the book (Title, Author, Illustrator, Publication date, ISBN, all of which can be found on the copyright page of the book or ask your author friend!). The library will see your request and most likely purchase the book. It’s a win-win–your friend gets their book out into the world, and your home library will now have a copy of the book for its patrons to check out. Even if the author isn't your friend, you can make a request for a particular book if you’d like to see it in the catalog just by having a library card.
Meet New People - I have fond memories of storytime when my kids were little. We would frequent the local library between breakfast and naptime, sit for a story, check out some new books, and meet new friends. Many of those friends, like us, would return week after week. It was a simple outing that we looked forward to every week and allowed us a break from the chaos of motherhood. Some of those new friends became lifelong friends, who years later reflect with me on those days of story time before an afternoon nap. I wasn't trying to make lifelong friends, but when you're going through those stages of life and others are going through the same thing, you can't help but form a bond. The library is absolutely a place to make great friends.
Promote Your Business - Have you ever thought of offering a free workshop to your community? Maybe you’re a real estate agent, and you want to teach others how to refinance their home. Or perhaps you run a crafty Etsy shop, and you want to offer a free sign-making class to teens. Authors can teach a self-publishing course or offer a story time to the kids in the community. Insurance agents can teach a class on Medicare for seniors. Whatever your specialty, consider contacting your local librarian to set up a class on their events schedule. While you won't necessarily make money from the workshop, the networking opportunities and marketing for your business will be priceless.
Getting a library card is like getting the keys to a world of endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to discover a new favorite book, visit an art museum, learn a new skill, or simply connect with the community, your local library has you covered. It’s an easy, free way to tap into a treasure trove of resources and opportunities—no strings attached. So why wait? Head over to your nearest library, get your card, and start exploring all the amazing perks waiting for you. Happy reading (and streaming, and learning, and saving)!
